This "Essence Form" distills many of the movements common to the diverse forms of Taiji. On this instructional DVD, each movement is first performed in a natural setting, then in a mirrored studio with detailed spoken instruction, then repeated in slow motion with on-screen prompts, to insure that you may acquire both the inner and the outer benefits of Taiji. The Chen Taiji Broadsword form is a classic weapon routine that is usually studied at the intermediate level. It enhances fajing, the relaxed, explosive release of force typical to Chen Taijiquan. The broadsword form is a rare example of the ferocity of Chen Taijiquan that emphasizes on speed and power delivered with the styles unique requirements. An old Chinese martial arts saying goes, Single broadsword techniques have focus on the hand while double broadsword techniques focus on the footwork. The Chen Style Taiji broadsword follows this idea with precise coordination between the broadsword-wielding hand and the empty hand. Comprised of [...]. |

A longtime student of the taiji grand master Yang Cheng-Fu, Chen Wei-Ming became famous himself as a scholar, martial artist, and proponent of the Yang style of t'ai chi. In the 1920s, he wrote a number of influential books on taiji, among them Taiji Sword (1927), which detailed a rare method of fencing. Translated here for the first time, this book serves as both a historical document and a training manual for an increasingly popular sport. |

A whole series of exercises with the Chen version of the Tai Chi ball which is generally associated with the Yang Family branch. One unique aspect is that Master Chen uses the ball almost as a massage device keeping it tight against his torso and rolling it along the front there. Tossing the ball, turning it, many types of movements which are also shown without the ball directly as self massage moves. Also, as a bonus this DVD ends with a demonstration of PAO CHUI, the second Chen set. |

This is the Old Frame, also known as Large Frame, the major set of Chen Tai Chi as it was developed by Chen Chan Xing. Chen Qing Zhou, a 19th generation inheritor, shows a highly instructive version of this set where if one finger moves the entire body moves. His is an excellent balance, unlike some Chen practitioners, of fluid movement and functional awareness. His actions are precise by flowing. Most importantly, he knows what he is doing. Of course there are different interpretations for movements in the Tai Chi spectrum but the essential ingrediant is to have SOME authentic interpretation. One of the best version of Lao Jia ranking the best of the [...]. |

This is a Chen version of the Tai Chi sword which, pretty obviously, harks back to the martial origins of the weapon. There is a not a lot of overplayed Reeling Silk Energy. In fact the movements are somewhat conservative. But there are unique stomping actions reminding us of Pao Chui many tight movements of the wrist with correctly positioned sword actions. Many of the moves are similar to the Yang style 13 Method sword and may historically show some linkage here. A slightly stilted but perfectly respectable set that will be particularly interesting to the Chen enthusiast or just Tai Chi collector. |
